Artifacts

Objects designed for one (temporary) purpose.  Some can be recycled; which offers an alternative use.  Most are discarded, they are rendered useless.  These objects become idle, they exist in a vacuum, aimless without a purpose.  I feel many of us are experiencing the same fate.  For many reasons we have come to believe that our sole purpose in life is to achieve economic success.  We are constantly reminded that “happiness” resides in the attainment of material goods.  Our sense of selves is co-dependent on the types and kinds of material goods we surround our selves with.  This sole purpose has led many of us to utter despair; the majority of us, the ones that have failed to climb the ladder of economic success.  By having failed, we wander aimlessly growing bitter and angry at the prospect of never fully accomplishing our “goal”.  The few that are able to succeed, soon discover that “happiness” does not reside in material goods.  And are soon left with the same feelings of bitterness and anger.  Empathy, compassion, developing a healthy sense of self, are not fully realized when you limit yourself to one purpose or goal in life.  I feel that society, now more than ever, is being afflicted by a disease of consumerism.  An insatiable thirst for things.  In this scenario there is hardly any room to nourish the soul or spirit in all of us.
